Natural fibers are generally the highest quality of sweater for its improved wearability and stretch. Always follow the care instructions that are sewn into them so they last for years and keep them folded in a drawer, not hanging in the closet.
Cashmere comes in many styles and prices and check the label, it can be hand washed and laid flat to dry. This is recommended to be done after six or seven wearings. You can expect to pay around $100 for a nice cashmere sweater. If wool makes you itch, look for Merino. Alpaca is strong and soft where lambswool is fine and soft. Mohair is long wearing and lustrous but keep them folded. Some wools can be machine washed.
Cotton is easy care and cotton sweaters are for anytime. It is virtually seasonless and the cotton sweater can go from the workplace to a weekend fashion statement instantly. There are many fun patterns and cool colors and cotton can be easily dyed for that personal color. For those of us who find wool or cashmere to hot, cotton is the perfect alternative.
